Conditions We Treat With Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty in Shrewsbury, Shropshire

As we age, our skin and muscles gradually lose their firmness and elasticity, resulting in visible changes to our appearance. One common area that can be affected by this natural process is our eyelids, which may start to sag and develop excess skin and wrinkles. Fortunately, Blepharoplasty – a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and tissue from the eyelids – offers an effective solution for restoring a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as Eyelid Surgery, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin and fat. This procedure can help reduce puffiness, sagging, and wrinkles around the eyes, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look.

Upper eyelid surgery is typically performed to address heavy or sagging lids that may obstruct vision or create an aged appearance. On the other hand, lower eyelid surgery can be used to correct bags under the eyes or improve the smoothness of the eyelid and cheek region. With an experienced surgeon and careful planning, blepharoplasty can provide long-lasting and natural-looking results.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

For the upper eyelid, tiny incisions are made along the natural creases of the eyelid. Any unwanted skin, fatty tissue, and muscle are then meticulously removed before the incision is closed. One of the benefits of this procedure is that the scar is hidden within the natural crease of the eyelid. Typically, if you suffer from dry eyes, the amount of tissue removed during the operation will be reduced. Finally, sutures or tissue adhesives are applied to the eyelid and eyebrow area to promote healing. With expert care and precision, your surgeon can help you achieve the refreshed and youthful appearance you desire.

Lower Eyelid Surgery is a popular option for individuals concerned with the appearance of their lower eyelids. During this procedure, the surgeon will make a small incision just below the eyelashes to remove or reposition fat and provide support to the tendons and muscles if necessary. Patients also have the option to combine a lower eyelid lift with an upper eyelid lift, as well as other facial surgeries such as a facelift or brow lift. This offers patients the convenience of having multiple procedures done in one go and only needing to recover once.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

One common issue that could lead you to consider eye surgery is the presence of drooping or sagging skin around the eyelid. This can cause difficulty opening your eyes thoroughly and may affect your vision. Another reason for Eyelid Surgery is the appearance of puffiness or bags under the eyes, which can make you look tired or older than you are. Additionally, excess skin and fine lines around the lower eyelids and upper eyelid sagging skin can also be addressed with blepharoplasty.

If these concerns affect your quality of life or self-confidence, speaking to a qualified professional about your options may be the next step.

Before undergoing Blepharoplasty, it is important to have a thorough consultation with a qualified surgeon. During the consultation, your surgeon will assess various factors to evaluate your suitability for the procedure. This includes any medical conditions that could increase surgical risk, such as diabetes or thyroid eye disease, as well as issues with dry eyes. Additionally, if you are a smoker, your surgeon may recommend quitting smoking for a few weeks before surgery, as smoking can slow the recovery process.

Despite its reputation, Blepharoplasty is generally not a painful surgery. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the post-operative recovery phase. Any slight discomfort can be easily managed with pain relief medication and eye ointments provided by your surgeon. Furthermore, patients can often return to work and resume their normal activities within a few days of the procedure, making it a convenient option for those looking to improve the look of their eyes.

Recovery from Blepharoplasty is typically quick, but it is important to keep in mind that the surgery is situated in the middle of the face. This means that dressings and any resulting bruising will be visible. While some patients may be tempted to resume their normal routine immediately after the procedure, it is best to avoid strenuous physical activity, as this can delay the recovery process. Working from home may be a viable option, but bruising around the lower eyelids typically takes 10-12 days to settle.

Upper eyelids, however, tend to heal more quickly. In order to disguise any visible bruising, we recommend cosmetic camouflage or makeup. If you are particularly sensitive, taking at least two weeks off before returning to work is best. Additionally, stitches are typically removed within the first week following the procedure, and it is not uncommon for vision to be slightly blurry for the first day as a result of the surgery and anaesthesia used.
