Pigmentation

There are many causes of irregular or excessive skin pigmentation.

Assessment and diagnosis by our skin specialists will allow the right treatment choice to be made to get the best results for you as an individual.

Freckling on the hands and face are generally the result of sun damage or the development of flat basal cell papillomas (ageing warts!). These respond well to a number of laser type treatments and at St Michael's Clinic we use either intense pulsed light photorejuvenation or the Trivantage laser.

Melasma or Chloasma is a condition causing facial pigmentation in women. Oestrogens in the contraceptive pill or the rise in oestrogens during pregnancy may cause or worsen the condition. For this reason the condition is also called the 'pregnancy mask'. Exposure to sunlight will only worsen the condition. Unfortunately the pigmentation may not improve even if the contraceptive pill and sunlight are avoided.

We have a number of methods for helping with skin pigment problems from laser treatments to prescription creams and chemical peels.
